A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, depicting a raft on the Hozugawa River amidst cherry blossoms in Kyoto.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the scenic Arashiyama district in Kyoto during the spring season. As part of the series Famous Places in Kyoto, the work captures the Hozugawa River, a site celebrated for its natural beauty and cherry trees. Hiroshige employs a characteristic composition, balancing the solid forms of the riverbank with the fluid movement of the water.
The print features a raft navigating the river, with figures using poles to guide the timber downstream. A small fire burns on the raft, producing a thin trail of smoke that rises against the blue water. Along the bank, cherry trees are rendered in soft pinks, contrasting with the darker, muted tones of the earth and foliage. The path winding along the shore provides a sense of scale, with small figures walking beneath the flowering branches.
Hiroshige was a master of the Ukiyo-e tradition, particularly known for his ability to convey atmosphere and weather conditions. His use of colour, including the application of Prussian blue, reflects the technical developments in Japanese printmaking during the nineteenth century. The print demonstrates his approach to spatial organisation, where foreground elements guide the eye toward the distant hills. The inclusion of calligraphic text and the artist's seal are standard features of this genre, identifying the series and the creator. This work offers a view into the aesthetic priorities of the Edo period, where the observation of seasonal change was a central theme in visual culture. The print remains a clear example of the technical precision achieved by the carvers and printers who collaborated with Hiroshige to produce these editions.
