A classic woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicting cherry blossom viewing at Goten Hill, with Mount Fuji visible in the distance.
This woodblock print belongs to the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, a collection that established Hokusai as a master of the genre. The scene depicts Goten Hill, a location known for its cherry blossoms and views of the bay. In the foreground, groups of people gather under the trees, participating in the traditional custom of hanami, or flower viewing. The figures are rendered with simple, expressive lines, capturing the social atmosphere of the Edo period.
Mount Fuji appears in the distance, its snow-capped peak providing a stable anchor against the expansive blue of the sky and water. Hokusai uses a controlled palette, relying on the Prussian blue pigment that became available in Japan during this era. This colour choice creates a sense of depth and atmospheric clarity. The composition balances the organic, sprawling forms of the cherry trees with the structured, geometric shapes of the buildings and the distant mountain.
Unlike later prints that focused on dramatic weather or singular subjects, this work captures a specific moment of leisure. The interplay between the human activity in the foreground and the natural monument in the background is characteristic of Hokusai's approach to the series. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock medium, with clear registration of colours and fine detail in the foliage and architectural elements. It remains a primary example of how Hokusai integrated human life into the natural world, documenting the social habits of his time while maintaining a focus on the iconic mountain.
