A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Hasegawa Sadanobu, depicting a serene spring scene with cherry blossoms, a mountain waterfall, and a bridge.
This woodblock print by Hasegawa Sadanobu is part of a series documenting regional sites across Japan. Sadanobu, a prominent figure in the Osaka school of printmaking, produced works that often focused on the specific topography and seasonal beauty of the Kansai region. This composition depicts a mountainous area during the spring, characterised by the presence of cherry blossoms in full bloom.
The visual structure relies on a layered approach to space. A long, narrow bridge spans the foreground, providing a human scale to the vast natural setting. Figures traverse this bridge, their presence suggesting the accessibility of these scenic locations to travellers of the period. The middle ground is occupied by a body of water, which reflects the surrounding hills and the pale pink of the flowering trees. A waterfall descends from the upper slopes, adding a vertical element to the otherwise horizontal orientation of the hills.
Sadanobu employs a palette dominated by deep teals and blues, which contrast with the soft, pale pinks of the blossoms. The use of colour blocks is typical of the mid-nineteenth-century Osaka style, where the focus remained on clarity of form and the atmospheric quality of the scene. The cartouches in the upper corners provide the series title and specific location details, a standard convention in Japanese print culture that served to inform the viewer of the geographic subject. The print captures a moment of seasonal transition, balancing the permanence of the mountains with the ephemeral nature of the blossoms. It is a representative example of the travel-themed prints that gained popularity as domestic tourism grew during the Edo period.
