An allegorical study of a female figure representing Certainty, rendered in delicate watercolour and ink by Dutch artist Pieter van den Berge.
This work by Pieter van den Berge, titled Zekerheid (Certainty), is an allegorical study executed in watercolour and ink. The composition features a female figure leaning against a stone plinth, a common device in period iconography to represent stability or constancy. Her posture is relaxed yet poised, with her gaze directed slightly away from the viewer, suggesting a contemplative state. The artist employs a soft, muted palette, typical of late seventeenth-century Dutch works on paper, where washes of ochre, pale blue, and sage green define the drapery and the surrounding foliage.
Van den Berge, active in the Netherlands during the transition from the seventeenth to the eighteenth century, often produced works that combined classical motifs with the stylistic sensibilities of his time. The figure is dressed in garments that reflect the fashion of the era, though the inclusion of the stone architectural element grounds the image in the tradition of personification. The ink lines are fluid, providing structure to the figure while the watercolour washes add volume and texture to the fabric. The background is suggested through light, gestural strokes, keeping the focus entirely on the central figure.
This piece offers a glimpse into the allegorical traditions that were popular in European art circles of the period. It functions as a study of human form and symbolic representation, demonstrating the artist's ability to balance technical precision with a lighter, more decorative approach to watercolour. The work remains a fine example of the period's interest in moral and philosophical concepts translated into visual form, presented with the characteristic restraint of Dutch draughtsmanship.
