A refined Shin-hanga woodblock print by Hiroshi Yoshida, capturing a weeping cherry tree in the rain at twilight.
Hiroshi Yoshida, a central figure in the Shin-hanga movement, produced this woodblock print in 1935. The work depicts a weeping cherry tree, or shidare-zakura, supported by a wooden framework, a common practice in Japanese gardens to protect the heavy, drooping branches. The scene captures the atmospheric quality of a rainy evening, with the soft, muted colours of the blossoms contrasting against the grey, wet environment. In the foreground, a figure stands by the edge of a pond, holding an umbrella. The reflection of the figure and the tree in the water adds a layer of depth to the composition. Yoshida was known for his extensive travels and his ability to translate the effects of light and weather into the medium of the woodblock print. He often worked closely with carvers and printers to achieve the specific tonal gradations seen here, which differ from the flat colour blocks of traditional ukiyo-e. The print demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of Yoshida's later career. The rain is suggested through subtle vertical lines, and the overall palette remains restrained, focusing on the pale pinks of the cherry blossoms and the cool, damp tones of the twilight. The composition balances the verticality of the tree supports with the horizontal lines of the pond bank and the water surface. This work reflects the artist's interest in capturing specific moments of natural beauty, filtered through a refined, painterly sensibility that bridges traditional Japanese aesthetics and Western watercolour techniques.
