A serene woodblock print by Itō Shinsui depicting the tranquil waters of Lake Biwa, featuring a stone lantern and traditional sailing vessels.
This print by Itō Shinsui depicts the Yakase Bridge area, a location historically associated with the Eight Views of Lake Biwa. As a practitioner of the Shin-hanga movement, Shinsui revitalised traditional woodblock techniques by incorporating modern sensibilities regarding light and atmospheric perspective. The composition balances the solid, vertical presence of a stone lantern and pine trees against the expansive, horizontal movement of the water and sailing vessels.
The artist employs a restrained palette, focusing on tonal variations to suggest the quietude of the scene. The water is rendered with fine, rhythmic lines that convey a sense of gentle motion, while the sky remains clear and open. The stone lantern, a common feature in Japanese garden and coastal design, provides a stable anchor for the viewer's eye. The inclusion of small boats with sails adds a human element to the natural setting, suggesting the daily commerce and travel that occurred across the lake.
Shinsui was a student of Kaburagi Kiyokata and became known for his ability to capture subtle moods in his subjects. In this series, he engages with a theme that has been explored by numerous artists throughout Japanese history, yet he approaches it with the technical precision characteristic of the early twentieth-century print revival. The work demonstrates a careful attention to the texture of the paper and the application of ink, resulting in a print that feels both grounded in tradition and distinct in its execution. The absence of heavy outlines allows the forms to emerge from the background through shading and contrast, a hallmark of the Shin-hanga approach to printmaking.
