A classic Dutch Golden Age genre scene by Pieter de Hooch, depicting a domestic transaction between a woman and her servant in a sunlit interior.
Pieter de Hooch, a master of the Dutch Golden Age, captures a quiet domestic interaction in this composition. The scene depicts a seated woman handing coins to a standing servant, who holds a metal pail. A young child stands beside the servant, observing the exchange. The setting is a typical Dutch interior, characterised by a chequered marble floor, a large fireplace, and a window that allows soft light to illuminate the figures. De Hooch focuses on the social hierarchy and the orderly nature of seventeenth-century Dutch households. The woman, dressed in a bright orange skirt and white bodice, occupies a position of authority. The servant, wearing a more muted blue dress, represents the domestic labour essential to the functioning of such homes. The inclusion of the child adds a layer of narrative, suggesting the continuity of family life within these private spaces. The artist employs a balanced composition, using the architectural elements of the room to guide the viewer's eye. The light from the left window creates subtle shadows, giving volume to the figures and texture to their clothing. The paintings hanging on the wall and the objects on the mantelpiece provide additional detail, grounding the scene in a specific historical reality. De Hooch avoids excessive ornamentation, preferring to let the interplay of light and the arrangement of the figures convey the atmosphere of the room. This work reflects the artist's interest in the daily routines of the middle class, a common subject for painters in Delft during this period. The precision in the rendering of the floor tiles and the reflective surfaces of the metal pail demonstrates the technical skill associated with the period.
