Giuseppe Arcimboldo, an Italian painter best known for his imaginative portrait heads made entirely of objects such as fruits, vegetables, flowers, and books, created the series 'The Four Seasons' between 1563 and 1573. 'Winter' is a striking example of Arcimboldo's unique style. The portrait presents a face composed of a gnarled tree trunk for the body and a tangle of bare branches for hair, symbolising the dormancy of winter. A few green leaves and a lemon adorn the figure, hinting at the persistence of life even in the coldest season. The woven straw mat draped around the figure's shoulders suggests a cloak, providing a sense of warmth and protection against the winter chill. The overall effect is both whimsical and slightly unsettling, reflecting the Mannerist fascination with artifice and the grotesque.
