A detailed 1543 engraving by Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert depicting the submission of William II of Cleves to Emperor Charles V.
This etching and engraving by Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert depicts the historical submission of William II, Duke of Jülich-Cleves-Berg, to the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V in 1543. The scene captures the political tension of the era, focusing on the moment of surrender following the Guelders Wars. Charles V is seated upon a raised dais, dressed in ornate armour, while William of Cleves kneels before him, offering his sceptre as a sign of defeat.
Coornhert employs a dense, cross-hatched technique to define the textures of the metallic armour, the heavy drapery of the tents, and the elaborate costumes of the surrounding courtiers. The composition is structured to draw the eye toward the central interaction between the two rulers, while the background provides a glimpse into the military encampment, complete with tents and banners. The Latin inscription at the base provides context for the event, documenting the formal transfer of power.
As a prominent figure in the Dutch Renaissance, Coornhert was known for his technical skill in printmaking, often collaborating with other artists of the period. This work reflects the stylistic conventions of mid-sixteenth-century Northern European printmaking, where attention to detail and the dramatic staging of historical events were highly valued. The print offers a window into the power dynamics of the Habsburg Empire, presenting a narrative of authority and submission through precise line work and balanced composition. The inclusion of the imperial orb and the heraldic shields reinforces the political weight of the encounter, making this a significant piece for those interested in European history and the development of print media during the Renaissance.
