A detailed study of a wheat field by American Regionalist Thomas Hart Benton, featuring rhythmic, sculptural forms and a warm, earthy palette.
Thomas Hart Benton, a central figure in the American Regionalist movement, produced this study of wheat in 1967. The work demonstrates his characteristic approach to form, which relies on rhythmic, sculptural modelling rather than traditional atmospheric perspective. Benton often utilised egg tempera, a medium that allowed for the precise, layered application of colour seen here in the golden stalks and deep, shadowed recesses of the field.
The composition is tightly cropped, focusing entirely on the verticality of the grain. Benton employs a stylised, almost rhythmic repetition of the stalks, which creates a sense of movement across the surface of the panel. The lower portion of the image reveals the stubble of the harvested crop, rendered with a geometric regularity that contrasts with the fluid, swaying motion of the standing wheat above. The palette is restricted to earthy ochres, browns, and deep shadows, which serve to emphasise the physical texture of the grain heads and the density of the field.
Benton spent much of his career documenting the rural life of the American Midwest. His work often prioritised the tactile qualities of the subject matter, treating natural forms with a sculptural weight. In this piece, the wheat is not merely a background element but the primary subject, presented with a degree of formal rigour that elevates the agricultural scene. The artist's technique, involving the application of thin glazes over a tempera base, results in a surface that possesses both clarity and depth. This print captures the precise brushwork and the specific tonal range of the original panel, offering a clear view of Benton's mature style during the later years of his career.
