A classical etching by Gérard de Lairesse depicting an allegorical scene of the element of Water, featuring a deity in a shell and a putto.
This etching by Gérard de Lairesse represents the element of Water, part of a series depicting the four classical elements. Lairesse, a significant figure in the Dutch Golden Age, was known for his adherence to classicism and his theoretical writings on art. In this composition, he employs a refined etching technique to render the mythological scene with precision.
The central figure, a female deity, sits atop a large scallop shell, a traditional iconographic reference to marine themes. Beside her, a putto holds a trident, reinforcing the aquatic subject matter. The background features a mountainous coastline, rendered with fine, parallel hatching that suggests distance and atmospheric perspective. The water itself is depicted through rhythmic, swirling lines that convey movement and texture.
Lairesse was influenced by French classicism, which is evident in the balanced composition and the idealised anatomy of the figures. His work often sought to elevate the status of painting and printmaking through the use of noble, historical, and mythological subjects. This print demonstrates his technical control over the etching needle, using varying line densities to create shadow and volume without the need for complex cross-hatching. The inclusion of the inscription 'G. Lairesse inventor et sculpsit' confirms his dual role as both the designer and the engraver of the plate. This piece provides a clear example of the formal, academic approach that defined much of his later career in Amsterdam.
