A woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro, titled 'Washing Clothes', depicting a woman in traditional dress performing her daily chores. This work exemplifies the ukiyo-e style, capturing a moment of everyday life with fine lines and muted colours.
Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806) was a Japanese artist and one of the most important designers of ukiyo-e woodblock prints and paintings. He is known especially for his bijin ōkubi-e or "large-headed pictures of beautiful women". He also produced prints of insects, birds, and animals. This print depicts a woman washing clothes in a wooden tub. She is seated on wooden sandals, wearing a patterned robe and head covering. Beside her is a wooden stand with irises. The composition is flat, typical of ukiyo-e, with fine lines and muted colours. The print captures a moment of everyday life, elevated through the artist's skill and attention to detail.
