A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu, depicting a mounted samurai in traditional armour.
This woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu depicts a mounted warrior in full armour, captured in a moment of motion. Harunobu is recognised for his contribution to the development of nishiki-e, or brocade prints, which allowed for the use of multiple colours in a single image. While this particular work relies on a strong monochromatic ink aesthetic, the composition demonstrates the artist's mastery of line and balance. The central figure, a samurai, sits atop a dark horse, his posture suggesting readiness for combat. He holds a fan aloft, a detail that contrasts with the martial nature of his attire. The background includes a simplified hill and pine trees, providing a sense of location without cluttering the visual field. Two additional figures are visible in the distance, adding depth to the scene. Harunobu's approach to the human form is stylised, favouring slender proportions and graceful lines that define the contours of the armour and the horse's musculature. The print exhibits the characteristic flat perspective common in Edo-period Japanese art. The artist uses varying line weights to distinguish between the textures of the horse's coat, the metal plates of the armour, and the organic forms of the landscape. The signature of the artist appears on the left, while the publisher's mark is located in the lower right corner. This work reflects the cultural fascination with historical narratives and the idealised image of the warrior class during the eighteenth century. The print serves as an example of the technical precision achieved by Japanese printmakers of the period, where every stroke contributes to the overall clarity of the image.
