A delicate watercolour and ink study by Pieter van den Berge, depicting a figure in a joyful, dance-like pose.
This work by Pieter van den Berge, titled Vrolijkheid, captures a figure in a state of exuberant motion. The title translates from Dutch as cheerfulness or gaiety, a theme reflected in the subject's open posture and raised arms. Van den Berge, a Dutch engraver and draughtsman active during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, often produced works that leaned into allegorical or character-based studies.
The drawing employs a delicate combination of ink outlines and soft watercolour washes. The artist uses a light touch to define the folds of the garment and the movement of the hair, suggesting a sense of spontaneity. The figure is depicted in a dance-like pose, with one leg lifted and the body angled to convey momentum. The muted palette, consisting of pale greens, soft greys, and subtle flesh tones, maintains a focus on the gesture rather than decorative detail.
In the context of Dutch art from this period, such studies often functioned as part of larger series exploring human temperaments or allegorical figures. The inclusion of the number 68 at the top of the sheet suggests this piece was once part of a larger collection or a numbered sequence of drawings. The composition is contained within a simple rectangular border, a common practice for works intended for albums or portfolios. The paper shows signs of age, providing a tactile quality that complements the light application of pigment. This print offers a glimpse into the observational practices of a Dutch artist working at the turn of the eighteenth century, where the study of human expression and movement remained a primary interest for draughtsmen.
