Description
A woodcut by Albrecht Altdorfer depicting the Visitation, a scene from the New Testament. The print showcases Altdorfer's skill in woodcut, with intricate linework and expressive figures.
This woodcut by Albrecht Altdorfer depicts the Visitation, a scene from the New Testament in which the Virgin Mary visits her cousin Elizabeth. Altdorfer, a leading figure of the German Renaissance, was known for his contributions to painting, printmaking, and architecture. He is considered one of the main artists of the Danube school, which favoured atmospheric settings and expressive landscapes. The composition shows Mary and Elizabeth embracing in the centre, with Joseph standing to the right, staff in hand. A detailed townscape appears on the left, while a dense forest fills the right background. The figures are rendered with fine, closely spaced lines, creating a sense of depth and texture. Altdorfer's skill in woodcut is evident in the level of detail achieved, from the folds of the drapery to the foliage of the trees. The print is characterised by its intricate linework and the expressive quality of its figures, typical of Altdorfer's style.

Artist Biography
Albrecht Altdorfer
He was born around 1480, probably in Regensburg, and became a citizen in 1505. He is credited with painting one of the first pure landscapes in oil with no human figures, Landscape with Footbridge (c. 1518 to 1520), a step that no European painter had taken since antiquity. He died in Regensburg in 1538.
