A detailed depiction of Saint Augustine in his study, capturing a moment of divine revelation through precise perspective and scholarly detail.
This work is part of the cycle depicting the life of Saint Jerome, originally commissioned for the Scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni in Venice. Vittore Carpaccio presents Saint Augustine in his study, captured at the precise moment he receives a divine message regarding the death of Saint Jerome. The composition is a masterclass in perspective and interior detail, reflecting the humanist interests of the Venetian Renaissance.
The room is rendered with meticulous attention to the objects of a scholar: open books, writing implements, and scientific instruments are arranged across the desk and shelves. The architecture is classical, featuring a coffered ceiling and a central niche housing a statue. Carpaccio uses light to define the space, with rays streaming from the right to illuminate the saint and cast long shadows across the floor. A small dog sits in the foreground, adding a touch of domestic realism to the scene. The colour palette is dominated by warm, earthy tones, which provide a sense of quietude and intellectual focus.
Carpaccio was known for his ability to integrate narrative elements into complex spatial arrangements. This painting is no exception, as it balances the spiritual subject matter with the tangible reality of a fifteenth-century study. The inclusion of various objects serves to ground the miraculous event in a recognisable environment. The artist's control over linear perspective creates a sense of depth that draws the viewer into the saint's private sanctuary. This piece remains a primary example of the Venetian school's approach to storytelling, where the environment is as expressive as the figures themselves. It offers a glimpse into the scholarly life of the period, framed through the lens of religious devotion.
