Description

A panoramic view of the Seine and Notre Dame, captured in a soft-ground etching and aquatint by Thomas Girtin from his final Parisian series.

This print originates from the series 'A Selection of Twenty of the Most Picturesque Views in Paris', a project Thomas Girtin undertook during his visit to France shortly before his death. The work captures a panoramic perspective of the Seine, looking towards the Pont de la Tournelle and the cathedral of Notre Dame. Girtin, a contemporary and rival of J.M.W. Turner, was instrumental in the development of English watercolour painting, and his approach to printmaking here reflects his mastery of atmospheric light and architectural form. The composition is anchored by the horizontal sweep of the river, which provides a calm foreground against the dense, urban silhouette of the city. Girtin employs a soft-ground etching technique, which allows for a painterly quality in the textures of the stone buildings and the rippling water. The aquatint process adds subtle tonal variations, creating a sense of depth that draws the eye from the grassy banks of the Arsenal towards the distant spires. The sky is rendered with characteristic restraint, featuring light washes that suggest a break in the clouds, casting a soft illumination over the cathedral. This series is noted for its departure from the rigid topographical conventions of the eighteenth century. Girtin prioritised the mood and the physical presence of the city over mere cartographic accuracy. The inclusion of small figures and boats along the riverbank provides a sense of scale, grounding the monumental architecture in the daily life of Paris. As one of the final works produced by the artist, it represents the culmination of his technical experimentation with print media. The print serves as a record of the Parisian cityscape at the turn of the nineteenth century, preserved through Girtin's distinctive, atmospheric lens.
