This gelatin silver print by László Moholy-Nagy offers an aerial view of a snow-covered Berlin landscape, emphasising geometric forms and the stark contrast between snow and dark pathways.
László Moholy-Nagy was a Hungarian painter and photographer as well as a professor in the Bauhaus school. He was a strong advocate of the integration of technology and industry into the arts. His work encompassed photography, typography, sculpture, and painting. Moholy-Nagy experimented with abstraction and the use of industrial materials. He believed art should reflect the modern world. 'View from the Berlin Radio Tower in Winter' presents an aerial perspective of a snow-covered landscape. The composition is dominated by geometric forms, particularly the circular shape of a plaza or garden. The stark contrast between the snow and the dark pathways creates a striking visual pattern. The photograph captures the urban environment from an unusual vantage point, reflecting Moholy-Nagy's interest in exploring new perspectives and the relationship between technology and the built environment. The high-angle view flattens the space, emphasising the abstract qualities of the scene.
