Agnolo Bronzino, an Italian Mannerist painter, was a court painter for the Medici family in Florence. Bronzino's work reflects the sophisticated and artificial atmosphere of the Florentine court during the High Renaissance. 'Venus, Cupido and Satyr' presents a complex allegorical scene. Venus, the goddess of love, reclines sensuously, while Cupid, her son, embraces her. A satyr, a mythological creature associated with revelry and lust, completes the trio. The figures are rendered with smooth, porcelain-like skin and elongated proportions, typical of Mannerist aesthetics. The composition is carefully arranged, with each figure contributing to the overall sense of balance and harmony. The painting's cool colour palette and precise execution further enhance its sense of detachment and intellectualism. The work is now part of the collection of the Galleria dell'Accademia, Florence.
