A delightful watercolour and charcoal drawing by Dutch Art Nouveau artist Theo van Hoytema, 'Varken Voor zijn kot bij een trog' (Pig Before its Pen by a Trough) captures a charming scene of rural life with delicate lines and subtle colours. A perfect addition to bring pastoral charm to your home.
Theo van Hoytema, a Dutch artist born in 1863, is best known for his contributions to the Art Nouveau movement, particularly his lithographic designs featuring birds and other animals. This charming watercolour and charcoal drawing, titled 'Varken Voor zijn kot bij een trog' (Pig Before its Pen by a Trough), offers a glimpse into his broader artistic interests. Created in April 1900, the work depicts a pig standing by its trough in front of a wooden pen. The scene is rendered with delicate lines and subtle washes of colour, capturing the rustic simplicity of rural life. The inscription at the bottom, 'WELKOMST GROET VAN BÉBÉ KEES' (Welcome Greeting from Bébé Kees), adds a personal touch, suggesting this may have been a gift or a commemorative piece. The artist's signature, 'VAN TINE x Th. VAN HOYTEMA', indicates a collaboration or dedication involving someone named Tine. As a fine art print, this piece brings a touch of pastoral charm and historical interest to any room. Its muted colour palette and delicate linework make it a versatile addition to both modern and traditional interiors, offering a unique blend of artistic skill and sentimental value.
