A woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai showing various dancing figures in traditional dress, rendered in simple, elegant lines typical of Japanese ukiyo-e prints.
This print by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) depicts various dancing figures. Hokusai was a Japanese artist, ukiyo-e painter and printmaker of the Edo period. He is best known as author of the woodblock print series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, which includes the iconic print, The Great Wave off Kanagawa. Hokusai created this series, and hundreds of other images, relatively late in life. He was driven by an interest in representing the natural world and the lives of ordinary people. The print shows a collection of figures in various poses, seemingly engaged in different types of dances or performances. The figures are rendered with simple, elegant lines, typical of Japanese woodblock prints. Some figures wear distinctive hats, while others are dressed in traditional robes. The composition is sparse, with the figures arranged in a seemingly random manner across the page. Calligraphic inscriptions accompany the figures, adding to the overall aesthetic of the print. The monochrome palette emphasises the linear quality of the design.
