A modernist composition by Arman Manookian, depicting figures in a domestic setting through simplified forms and bold colour planes.
Arman Manookian, an American artist of Armenian descent, produced this work during his brief but productive period in Hawaii. His approach to painting often involved simplified forms and a deliberate use of colour to define space, reflecting the influence of early twentieth-century modernist movements. The composition depicts three figures engaged in the preparation of food, set against a stylised environment that prioritises decorative balance over anatomical precision.
The scene is constructed through flat planes of colour, with the ochre and orange tones of the ground providing a warm, unified backdrop for the figures. Manookian employs bold outlines to separate the subjects from their surroundings, a technique that flattens the pictorial space and draws attention to the rhythmic arrangement of the forms. The white tree, positioned to the right, acts as a structural element that anchors the composition while providing a stark contrast to the warmer hues of the earth and the figures.
Manookian’s work is noted for its focus on the daily life of the people of Hawaii, captured with a sense of quiet observation. The figures are rendered with minimal detail, yet their postures convey a clear sense of purpose and interaction. The inclusion of domestic objects, such as the bowl and the food items, suggests a scene of communal activity. By eschewing realistic shading in favour of solid colour fields, the artist creates a graphic quality that is characteristic of his mature style. This print captures the artist's ability to synthesise local subject matter with a modernist aesthetic, resulting in a composition that is both balanced and visually direct. The work remains a representative example of his brief career, during which he documented the cultural environment of the Pacific with a distinct, personal vision.
