A minimalist composition by Günther Förg featuring a central turquoise band flanked by black fields, executed on a lead support.
This work by German artist Günther Förg represents his engagement with the materiality of the painting surface. Förg often utilised lead as a support for his acrylic applications, allowing the physical weight and texture of the metal to interact with the painted colour fields. The composition is defined by a strict, horizontal division of space. A central band of saturated turquoise sits between two expansive blocks of matte black. Förg rejected the notion of the canvas as a window into an illusionistic space. Instead, he treated the painting as a physical object. The lead surface retains subtle imperfections, creases, and variations in tone that emerge through the thin layers of acrylic paint. This approach shifts the viewer's attention from representational imagery to the tactile qualities of the medium itself. The stark contrast between the dark, heavy lead and the luminous, flat turquoise creates a tension that is characteristic of his practice during this period. His work often references the history of modernism, particularly the geometric abstraction of the early twentieth century. However, Förg stripped away the utopian aspirations of those movements, opting for a more direct, material-focused aesthetic. By limiting his palette to these specific tones, he forces a confrontation with the scale and presence of the work. The result is an object that occupies the wall with a sense of gravity, demanding a physical awareness from the viewer. This print captures the specific sheen of the acrylic on the lead support, maintaining the integrity of the original surface textures and the precise boundaries of the colour blocks.
