A satirical lithograph by Marius Bauer depicting the political tensions surrounding the Dutch school struggle in the late nineteenth century.
This lithograph by Marius Bauer, titled Uit den schoolwet-strijd, offers a sharp visual commentary on the Dutch school struggle of the late nineteenth century. The work depicts a scene of political and religious tension, featuring a central monarch flanked by a bishop and a commoner. The bishop holds a large Bible, while the commoner raises a protest sign reading 'Geen schoolwet zulle!!', reflecting the public opposition to the proposed educational legislation of the period. A small child, positioned at the feet of the figures, cries, adding a layer of domestic anxiety to the grand political theatre.
Bauer, known primarily for his later Orientalist scenes, demonstrates a different facet of his practice here. His draughtsmanship is loose and expressive, utilising soft, textured marks to build the figures and the architectural setting. The banner above the figures, inscribed with the Belgian national motto 'L'union fait la force', provides an ironic contrast to the discord depicted below. The composition is structured to place the viewer in the position of an observer to a power struggle, where the interests of the church, the state, and the populace collide.
This print captures a specific moment in Dutch history when the role of religious education in public schools was a subject of intense debate. Bauer employs caricature to define the characters, giving the monarch a bewildered expression and the bishop a stern, imposing presence. The work functions as a historical document of the social climate in the Netherlands during the 1880s, revealing the artist's engagement with contemporary political issues before his focus shifted towards his travels in the East. The lithographic medium allows for a painterly quality, with subtle gradations of tone that define the shadows and the heavy drapery of the figures' robes.
