Description
Two panels attributed to Filippo Lippi depict a male and female saint in tempera. The figures are rendered with delicate lines and a restrained colour palette, characteristic of Early Renaissance religious art.
These two panels, attributed to Filippo Lippi, present a pair of saints rendered in tempera. The left panel depicts a male saint, possibly a monastic figure, clad in dark robes. A halo of golden light encircles his head, and his gaze is directed slightly downward. The right panel features a female saint, dressed in a light-coloured habit, also adorned with a halo. She holds a book and rosary beads, with a small, dark figure, possibly a demon, lurking near her feet. Both figures are set against a simple architectural backdrop, framed by a shallow arch. The colour palette is restrained, dominated by muted tones of brown, grey, and gold. The composition is straightforward, emphasising the figures' piety and solemnity. Filippo Lippi (1406-1469) was an Italian painter of the Early Renaissance. He spent time as a Carmelite friar, but left the monastery to pursue painting. Lippi's work is characterised by its delicate figures, graceful lines, and use of colour. He was a significant influence on later Florentine artists, including Sandro Botticelli, who was his student. Lippi's paintings often combine religious themes with a humanistic sensibility, reflecting the changing cultural values of the Renaissance.
