A detailed 1657 drawing by Marten de Cock depicting two figures fishing in a serene, wooded river setting with a waterfall.
This drawing by Marten de Cock, dated 1657, captures a quiet scene of two figures fishing beside a waterfall. The composition employs a classic framing technique, using dense foliage on the left and right sides to draw the eye toward the central clearing. The artist uses pen and brown ink to define the forms of the trees and rocks, while grey wash provides depth and atmospheric perspective to the distant hills.
The figures are small in scale, integrated into the environment rather than dominating it. One person stands in the water, while the other sits on the bank, their presence adding a sense of human activity to the natural setting. The waterfall on the left provides a vertical element that contrasts with the horizontal expanse of the river and the open sky. De Cock demonstrates a precise approach to line work, particularly in the rendering of the tree trunks and the textures of the rocky outcrop.
As a Dutch artist active during the seventeenth century, de Cock worked within a tradition that valued the observation of nature. This work reflects the period's interest in topographical detail and the play of light across water. The use of a limited palette of brown ink and grey wash is characteristic of the period's preparatory drawings and finished sketches. The work remains a clear example of the technical skill required to balance naturalistic detail with a structured, harmonious composition. It offers a glimpse into the aesthetic priorities of the era, where the depiction of the natural world was a primary concern for many artists.
