A 1917 botanical study of tulips by Dutch designer Theo Colenbrander, featuring fluid lines and annotated colour notes for production.
This study, titled Tulpen, originates from the hand of the Dutch designer and architect Theo Colenbrander. Dated 22 June 1917, the work functions as a preparatory design, likely intended for ceramic decoration or textile production. Colenbrander was a figure of significant influence within the Dutch decorative arts, known for his idiosyncratic approach to form and colour.
The composition features two tulip blossoms rendered with a distinct, graphic sensibility. The artist employs a fluid, calligraphic line to define the petals and foliage, while washes of muted colour fill the forms. The palette is restrained, focusing on soft ochres, dusty purples, and muted greens. Annotations are visible across the sheet, including the phrase '6 kleuren' (6 colours), which indicates the technical requirements for the intended manufacturing process. The presence of these handwritten notes, alongside the date and approval stamps, provides a direct view into the artist's working method.
Colenbrander's style often moved away from the strict naturalism of his contemporaries, favouring a more stylised, rhythmic interpretation of botanical subjects. The tulips are not depicted with photographic precision, but rather as abstracted shapes that balance decorative potential with organic observation. The paper shows signs of age, with a warm, aged tone that complements the soft application of the watercolour. This piece offers a clear example of the intersection between fine art drawing and industrial design in the early twentieth century. It captures the transition from the organic curves of Art Nouveau toward the more geometric, controlled patterns that would define later design movements in the Netherlands.
