A classic still life by Scottish Colourist Samuel Peploe, featuring tulips in a jar and a single piece of fruit, rendered with expressive brushwork.
Samuel Peploe, a member of the Scottish Colourists, produced this still life during his mature period. The composition demonstrates his interest in the formal arrangement of objects and the application of paint. Peploe employs a palette dominated by deep blues, soft pinks, and warm orange tones, creating a balance between the cool background and the warmer elements of the tulips and fruit. The brushwork is deliberate and expressive. Peploe does not seek to replicate the exact texture of the petals or the jar, but rather to capture the essence of light and form. The tulips are rendered with broad strokes, while the jar sits as a solid, rounded shape against the flatter background. The inclusion of a single piece of fruit on the table provides a counterpoint to the verticality of the flowers, grounding the arrangement within the space. Peploe spent time in Paris, where he absorbed the influence of French post-impressionist painters. This exposure is evident in his approach to colour and his rejection of traditional academic finish. He focuses on the relationship between shapes and the way light interacts with surfaces. The work reflects his disciplined approach to painting, where every mark serves a purpose in defining the structure of the scene. By simplifying the visual information, he invites the viewer to observe the interplay of colour and tone rather than the specific details of the objects themselves. This piece remains a representative example of his later work, where he refined his technique to achieve a sense of clarity and balance.
