A triptych attributed to Annibale Carracci, featuring angelic figures in oil on copper panels set within an ornate, gilded wooden frame. The work exemplifies the Baroque style with its classical and naturalistic approach.
This triptych is attributed to Annibale Carracci, an Italian painter active during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Carracci, along with his brother Agostino and cousin Ludovico, was instrumental in establishing the Baroque style, moving away from late Mannerism and towards a more classical and naturalistic approach. The Carracci brothers founded an art academy in Bologna that promoted drawing from life and a return to the principles of High Renaissance masters. The triptych features two main panels depicting angelic figures. The left panel shows an angel, possibly Michael, wielding a sword over a fallen figure. The right panel presents another angel, perhaps a guardian angel, with a child. Above these panels are two smaller, arched compartments, each containing a seated figure in contemplative poses. The paintings are executed on copper, a common support for smaller, detailed works during this period. The triptych is framed by an elaborate dark wood structure, adorned with gilded, scrolling foliage, which adds to the overall decorative effect.
