A detailed lithograph by Richard Parkes Bonington depicting the historic Tour du Gros Horloge in Evreux, capturing the architectural character and market life of the period.
This lithograph depicts the Tour du Gros Horloge in Evreux, a structure that captured the imagination of many artists during the early nineteenth century. Richard Parkes Bonington, a British painter who spent much of his short career in France, produced this work as part of the 'Voyages pittoresques et romantiques dans l'ancienne France', a massive publishing project led by Baron Taylor. The print captures the Gothic architecture of the clock tower with precision, balancing the verticality of the stone structure against the bustling activity of the market scene below.
Bonington demonstrates his mastery of light and shadow, using the lithographic medium to create soft, atmospheric transitions in the sky and sharp, defined edges on the masonry. The figures in the foreground, dressed in period attire, provide a sense of scale and daily life, grounding the monumental architecture in a human context. The composition draws the eye upward along the tower, which is adorned with decorative elements typical of the period. The inclusion of the clock face and the surrounding timber-framed buildings adds texture to the scene, reflecting the artist's interest in historical sites and the preservation of French heritage.
As a practitioner of the Romantic style, Bonington often sought out subjects that evoked a sense of history and place. This print is a fine example of his ability to translate the texture of stone and the quality of light into a monochrome medium. The work remains a record of the site as it appeared in the early nineteenth century, offering a glimpse into the architectural character of Evreux. The technical execution, characteristic of the Engelmann press, ensures that the tonal range remains clear and expressive, making it a representative piece of the era's fascination with topographical and architectural documentation.
