An allegorical title page for the Plaisante Plaetsen series, featuring the Haarlem coat of arms flanked by figures of Diligence and Time.
This etching serves as the title page for the series Plaisante Plaetsen (Pleasant Places), a collection of prints documenting the rural surroundings of Haarlem. Claes Jansz. Visscher, a prominent Dutch engraver and publisher, designed this composition to frame the geographical subject matter within a moralising, allegorical context.
At the centre of the print, the coat of arms of Haarlem is displayed, flanked by two allegorical figures. To the left, a female figure representing Diligentia (Diligence) sits with an open book, embodying the studious observation required to appreciate the landscape. To the right, a figure of Time, depicted with a scythe and lantern, provides a counterpoint, suggesting the fleeting nature of the scenes captured in the series. The Latin inscription, Vicit Vim Virtus, reinforces the classical humanist tone of the work.
The background features a gnarled tree and a ship, elements that connect the local identity of Haarlem to broader themes of trade and nature. The text below the central shield provides both Latin and Dutch verses, inviting the viewer to explore the pleasant locations depicted in the subsequent plates. Visscher’s technique demonstrates the precision characteristic of early seventeenth-century Dutch printmaking, with fine lines used to define the textures of the figures, the heraldic shield, and the surrounding foliage.
This print is a significant example of how seventeenth-century publishers used allegorical title pages to elevate topographical series. By framing the rural views of Haarlem with classical personifications, Visscher positions the act of viewing the landscape as a virtuous and intellectual pursuit. The work remains a primary source for understanding the cultural values associated with the Dutch countryside during this period, reflecting a society that found both aesthetic pleasure and moral instruction in its own geography.
