An original 1863 etching by Jules Ferdinand Jacquemart, serving as the title page for his portfolio 'Les Quatre Elements'.
This etching serves as the title page for the portfolio 'Les Quatre Elements', published in 1863 by Cadart and Chevalier in Paris. Jules Ferdinand Jacquemart, a French etcher and watercolourist, demonstrates his technical precision in this work. The composition features a central stone tablet, rendered with subtle shading to suggest texture and weight. The typography is integrated into the surface of the stone, mimicking an inscription carved directly into the material. The artist employs fine lines to create the weathered appearance of the tablet, complete with small holes and chipped edges that provide a sense of physical reality.
Jacquemart was well known for his ability to reproduce the qualities of various materials, such as glass, metal, and stone, through the medium of etching. This title page reflects his meticulous approach to printmaking, where the focus remains on the clarity of the lettering and the tactile representation of the stone surface. The work is a clear example of the mid-nineteenth-century interest in high-quality print production, often associated with the Société des Aquafortistes, which aimed to promote etching as a fine art form. The sparse, clean layout allows the viewer to appreciate the balance between the text and the simulated stone texture. It is a piece that documents the collaborative nature of nineteenth-century publishing, noting the specific address of the editors on Rue Richelieu. The print is a study in restraint, relying on the quality of the line and the composition of the text to convey its message. It remains a representative example of Jacquemart's skill in translating three-dimensional objects into the two-dimensional space of the printed page.
