Robert Julian Onderdonk is frequently identified as the father of Texas painting. This work captures the specific atmospheric conditions of the Texas Hill Country, a subject that dominated his output during his later years. Onderdonk studied under William Merritt Chase in New York before returning to his home state, where he applied the techniques of American Impressionism to the distinct flora and light of the American South-West.
