A dynamic depiction of traditional goat threshing in 1920s New Mexico, captured with the energetic brushwork of American Realist John French Sloan.
John French Sloan, a key figure in the Ashcan School, spent several summers in New Mexico during the 1920s. This work captures a traditional agricultural scene in Santa Fe, where goats are utilised to thresh grain. The composition is organised around a circular wooden enclosure, which contains a dense mass of animals in motion. Figures in contemporary dress stand at the perimeter, observing the activity, while others actively manage the goats within the ring.
Sloan employs a palette of earthy ochres, dusty browns, and deep greens, punctuated by the white forms of the goats. The sky is heavy with dramatic, dark clouds, suggesting an approaching storm over the arid terrain. His brushwork is energetic and direct, reflecting his background as a newspaper illustrator. The painting documents a specific cultural practice in the American Southwest, moving away from the urban subjects that defined his earlier career in New York. The spatial arrangement creates a sense of depth, drawing the eye from the foreground figures across the threshing floor to the rolling hills in the distance. The work provides a clear view of the regional customs and the physical environment of the area during the early twentieth century.
