Description

A modernist lithograph by Max Weber depicting three male figures in an athletic, angular composition. This work reflects early 20th-century Cubist influences through its bold lines and simplified forms.

Max Weber was a Russian-born American painter and printmaker who became a central figure in the introduction of European modernism to the United States. After studying in Paris under Henri Matisse and befriending Henri Rousseau, Weber returned to New York with a style that merged the structural experiments of Cubism with the energy of Futurism. This lithograph, titled Three Figures, Wrestlers, demonstrates his interest in the human form as a series of geometric volumes and rhythmic lines. It belongs to a period where Weber was actively translating the avant-garde techniques he witnessed in Europe into an American context. The composition features three nude male figures arranged in a compact group. Two figures appear engaged in a struggle or athletic pose, while a third sits at the base of the scene. Weber uses heavy, charcoal-like strokes to define the musculature and posture of the men. The lines are thick and expressive, creating a sense of weight and physical tension. The background is suggested through broad, gestural marks that provide a sense of space without defining a specific location. The artist avoids fine detail, choosing instead to focus on the collective mass and movement of the bodies. This work reflects the influence of Paul Cézanne and the early Cubist works of Pablo Picasso. Weber focuses on the simplification of the body into essential shapes. The limbs are rendered with sharp angles and flattened planes, a technique that rejects traditional academic naturalism in favour of a more direct, modern expression. The use of monochrome lithography allows the viewer to focus on the interplay of light and shadow, as well as the raw energy of the artist's hand. By stripping away colour, Weber emphasises the structural integrity of the figures and the rhythmic balance of the entire arrangement.
