A striking Nabis-era painting by Georges Lacombe, featuring three women in traditional Breton dress within a stylised, decorative forest setting.
Georges Lacombe was a member of the Nabis, a group of French artists who sought to move beyond the constraints of naturalism. This work, painted during his time in Brittany, reflects the group's interest in simplified forms, flat planes of colour, and the expressive potential of non-naturalistic palettes. The composition features three women seated in a forest, their figures rendered with minimal modelling and bold outlines.
The forest background is reduced to a series of vertical, rhythmic strokes, creating a decorative effect that flattens the pictorial space. Lacombe uses a palette of deep blues, ochres, and muted reds to establish a sombre, contemplative mood. The women wear traditional Breton attire, yet their faces are stylised, suggesting a focus on symbolic presence rather than individual portraiture. The lack of depth and the emphasis on pattern align with the Nabis' rejection of traditional perspective in favour of a more subjective, decorative approach to painting.
Lacombe often spent his summers in Brittany, where the local culture and rural environment provided a recurring subject for his work. This piece captures the quiet, ritualistic quality of life in the region, filtered through the lens of the Nabis' aesthetic theories. The work invites the viewer to consider the relationship between the figures and their environment, not as a realistic scene, but as a constructed image where colour and line dictate the emotional tone. By stripping away unnecessary detail, Lacombe directs attention to the essential shapes and the interplay of the figures against the forest backdrop. This approach remains characteristic of his output during the 1890s, a period when he experimented with wood carving and painting to achieve a unified, graphic style.
