Description
This etching by Francisco Goya, titled "They Who Cannot", is part of his "Los Caprichos" series. It critiques societal structures through a depiction of men burdened by donkeys, symbolising the weight of the ruling classes on the common people.
Francisco Goya's "They Who Cannot" is a print from his series "Los Caprichos", created between 1797 and 1798. The series is a set of 80 prints that critique Spanish society, particularly the aristocracy and clergy, through satire and dark humour. Goya used the aquatint technique to achieve tonal gradations, enhancing the dramatic effect of the scenes. The prints were offered for sale in 1799, but were withdrawn from sale shortly after due to fear of reprisal from the Inquisition. In this image, two donkeys are perched atop three men who are struggling to carry them. The donkeys, symbols of ignorance and arrogance, represent the ruling classes who are supported by the labour and suffering of the common people. The men are bent under the weight, their faces showing strain and exhaustion. The composition is stark, with a dark background that throws the figures into sharp relief. The inscription at the bottom, "Tu que no puedes" (You who cannot), adds a layer of irony, highlighting the helplessness of those burdened by the powerful.
