A detailed costume design by Dutch artist and actor Johannes Jelgerhuis for the character of Aegisthus in a production of Agamemnon.
This drawing by Johannes Jelgerhuis depicts a costume design for the character of Aegisthus, intended for a theatrical production of Aeschylus's tragedy, Agamemnon. Jelgerhuis was a multifaceted figure in the Dutch cultural sphere, active as both a painter and a prominent actor at the Amsterdam City Theatre. His dual career provided him with a unique perspective on stagecraft, allowing him to balance historical accuracy with the practical requirements of theatrical performance.
The figure is rendered with clear, precise lines, characteristic of the Neoclassical interest in classical antiquity. The costume consists of a short tunic, or chiton, featuring decorative borders and tied sleeves. The artist includes a separate detail study of the sleeve construction to the right of the main figure, demonstrating the technical focus of the work. The character wears laced footwear, consistent with nineteenth-century interpretations of ancient Greek attire. The wash application provides subtle volume to the drapery, while the overall composition remains focused on the silhouette and functional details of the garment.
Jelgerhuis produced numerous such designs during his tenure at the theatre, documenting the visual language of early nineteenth-century Dutch stage productions. These works offer a glimpse into the period's approach to classical drama, where the aesthetic was often filtered through the lens of contemporary fashion and theatrical convention. The drawing is executed on paper with a neutral tone, allowing the ink lines to define the form without distraction. This piece is a record of the collaborative nature of theatre, where visual artists and performers worked in tandem to bring ancient narratives to the stage for a modern audience.
