A detailed historical genre painting by Luc-Olivier Merson, depicting a scene from the legend of Saint Francis and the wolf in a medieval Italian town.
Luc-Olivier Merson, a prominent figure in the French Academic tradition, produced this work in 1877. The painting depicts a scene from the legend of Saint Francis of Assisi, specifically the encounter between the saint and the wolf that terrorised the town of Gubbio. Merson focuses on the medieval setting, constructing a narrow, stone-paved street that recedes into the background under a stone archway. The architecture is rendered with careful attention to texture, showing the weathered surfaces of old buildings and the worn stones of the thoroughfare.
In the foreground, a woman in a dark cloak walks cautiously, accompanied by a child. To the left, a butcher shop displays hanging carcasses, providing a stark contrast to the quiet, almost eerie atmosphere of the street. The wolf, central to the narrative, is positioned near the butcher, appearing less as a monstrous beast and more as a creature integrated into the daily life of the town. Merson employs a muted palette, dominated by earthy tones, greys, and browns, which reinforces the historical and somber mood of the narrative. The lighting is diffused, suggesting an overcast day, which allows the artist to model the forms of the figures and the architectural details with precision. Merson was known for his rigorous training at the École des Beaux-Arts, and this work reflects his technical proficiency in composition and historical accuracy. The painting captures a moment of quiet tension, inviting the viewer to observe the interplay between the human inhabitants and the wild animal within the confines of the medieval urban environment.
