A detailed 1762 etching by Hendrik Spilman documenting a sperm whale stranded on the Dutch coast, capturing the event with historical precision.
This etching and engraving by Hendrik Spilman documents a specific natural event from the eighteenth century. The print depicts a sperm whale, or cachelot, that washed ashore between the Dutch coastal towns of Zandvoort and Wijk op Zee on 20 February 1762. Spilman, a Dutch engraver and draughtsman, worked from a drawing by Jan Augustini to produce this detailed record of the stranded creature. The composition captures the scale of the whale against the vast, flat expanse of the Dutch coastline. The animal dominates the foreground, its massive form rendered with precise lines that define the texture of its skin and the curve of its body. Beside the whale, several figures are present, including onlookers and individuals documenting the scene. A horse-drawn carriage sits to the left, providing a sense of scale and context to the event. The sky is filled with heavy, layered clouds, typical of the coastal weather, while the horizon remains low to emphasise the breadth of the beach. Such prints were common in the eighteenth century, serving as visual reports of unusual natural phenomena. They functioned as both scientific curiosities and public entertainment. The text at the bottom of the plate provides the date and location, as well as the length of the whale, which was recorded as 69 feet and 6 inches. The work demonstrates the technical skill of Spilman in translating a field sketch into a formal print, maintaining the observational quality of the original observation. The print remains a valuable historical record of the maritime history of the Netherlands, offering a glimpse into how such events were observed and recorded by the public during this period.
