A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Gérard Audran, depicting the Triumphal Entry of Constantine into Rome after a design by Pietro da Cortona.
This large-scale engraving by Gérard Audran depicts the Triumphal Entry of Constantine into Rome, a subject derived from the designs of Pietro da Cortona. Audran, a master of the burin, translates the grandiosity of the original painted cycle into a precise monochrome medium. The composition follows the conventions of seventeenth-century history painting, utilising a wide, panoramic view to accommodate the dense procession of soldiers, horses, and allegorical figures.
In the foreground, Constantine sits upon a chariot, his posture conveying authority as he leads his troops through the city. The architectural backdrop features classical columns and pediments, establishing a sense of Roman antiquity. Above the central figures, winged deities descend from clouds, adding a layer of divine intervention to the historical event. The right side of the print shows soldiers on horseback, their armour and weaponry rendered with meticulous attention to texture and light. The lower margin contains a dedication and a coat of arms, typical of the formal presentation prints produced during the reign of Louis XIV.
Audran employs a variety of line weights to distinguish between the foreground figures and the distant structures. The cross-hatching techniques create depth and volume, particularly in the drapery of the garments and the musculature of the horses. This work reflects the period's interest in classical themes and the technical mastery required to reproduce complex compositions for a wider audience. The print serves as a record of the collaborative relationship between painters and engravers in the French Royal Academy, where Audran held a position of high regard. The balance between the architectural rigour and the dynamic movement of the crowd demonstrates the technical control characteristic of Audran's output.
