A masterful 1621 engraving by Lucas Vorsterman I, after Peter Paul Rubens, depicting the biblical scene of The Tribute Money with dramatic Baroque lighting.
This engraving by Lucas Vorsterman I depicts the biblical scene of The Tribute Money, based on an original composition by Peter Paul Rubens. Vorsterman was a highly skilled printmaker who worked closely with Rubens, translating the painter's dynamic compositions into the precise medium of copperplate engraving. The work captures the moment Christ instructs his followers to render unto Caesar what is Caesar's, while surrounded by a group of inquisitive figures.
The composition is defined by the dramatic interplay of light and shadow, a hallmark of the Baroque period. Vorsterman employs varied line weights to model the figures, creating a sense of volume in the drapery and depth in the facial expressions. The central figure of Christ is illuminated, drawing the eye toward his gesture, while the surrounding men are rendered with individualised features and textures, from the coarse beards to the heavy fabrics of their garments. The Latin inscription at the top, 'REDDITE QVAE SVNT CAESARIS CAESARI ET QVAE DEI DEO', provides the scriptural context for the encounter.
As a master of the burin, Vorsterman demonstrates technical control in the way he handles the cross-hatching to suggest skin tone and atmospheric space. The print reflects the collaborative nature of the Rubens workshop, where the translation of paintings into prints allowed for the wider dissemination of religious and historical narratives. This piece is a fine example of seventeenth-century reproductive printmaking, where the engraver sought to maintain the energy of the original oil sketch while adapting it to the monochromatic requirements of the printed page. The attention to detail in the hands and the coins held between them provides a tactile quality to the scene, grounding the theological subject in a human, material reality.
