Auguste Rodin conceived The Thinker in 1880 as part of his larger commission, The Gates of Hell. Originally intended to represent Dante Alighieri at the summit of the gates, the figure contemplates the scenes of suffering below. Rodin later enlarged the work, presenting it as an independent sculpture in 1904. The figure sits in a state of deep concentration, his body tensed with physical and mental exertion. His right elbow rests upon his left knee, while his hand supports his chin. The musculature is rendered with a tactile quality, capturing the tension of a body in repose yet active in thought.

Rodin utilised a rough, textured surface to manipulate light across the bronze. This technique allows the sculpture to appear dynamic, as shadows shift across the contours of the back, shoulders, and legs. The figure is devoid of clothing, stripping away historical context to focus on the universal human experience of introspection. The composition is balanced, with the weight of the torso leaning forward, creating a sense of gravity and groundedness.
