A detailed 1547 engraving by Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert depicting the surrender of the Elector of Saxony to Emperor Charles V.
This engraving depicts the surrender of John Frederick I, Elector of Saxony, following his defeat at the Battle of Mühlberg in 1547. The work is based on a design by the painter Maarten van Heemskerck, whose influence is evident in the muscular figures and the dramatic, theatrical staging of the scene. The composition places the victorious Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V, on horseback, surrounded by his retinue, while the defeated Elector approaches on foot, his posture conveying the gravity of his situation.
Coornhert employs a precise, linear technique characteristic of mid-sixteenth-century Dutch printmaking. The hatching and cross-hatching define the textures of the armour, the horses' trappings, and the surrounding foliage. The background features a distant view of the battlefield, with smoke rising from the conflict, providing a sense of scale and historical context. The Latin inscription at the base of the print serves to identify the figures and the nature of the event, documenting the political shift that followed the Schmalkaldic War.
As a printmaker, Coornhert was instrumental in disseminating the stylistic innovations of the Italianate Dutch masters. This work demonstrates the technical rigour required to translate complex painterly compositions into the medium of engraving. The attention to detail, from the ornate metalwork on the horses to the expressions of the soldiers, reflects the period's interest in both historical documentation and the display of artistic skill. The print remains a valuable record of sixteenth-century military history and the visual language of the Northern Renaissance.
