A 1946 portrait by Romanian modernist Iosif Iser, featuring a woman in a traditional mantilla rendered with expressive, textured brushwork.
Iosif Iser, a significant figure in Romanian modernism, produced this portrait in 1946. The work displays his characteristic approach to form and colour, which he developed after extensive travels in Spain and the Dobruja region. Iser often focused on the human figure, stripping away unnecessary detail to concentrate on the psychological presence of his subjects. The subject is depicted in profile, wearing a traditional lace mantilla. Iser employs a heavy, impasto application of paint, creating a textured surface that catches the light. The palette is dominated by earthy ochres, muted greens, and a deep, saturated crimson for the subject's garment. The lace of the mantilla is rendered with quick, gestural brushstrokes that suggest the delicate pattern without resorting to literal representation. The background remains largely abstract, a wash of olive and gold tones that pushes the figure forward into the viewer's space. Iser's technique here reflects his interest in the structural qualities of painting. He avoids smooth transitions, preferring instead to build the facial features through blocks of colour and shadow. The expression is stoic, capturing a moment of quiet contemplation. This piece is representative of his mid-career output, where he moved away from the more rigid academic styles of his early training toward a more expressive, personal visual language. The focus remains on the interplay between the light hitting the lace and the solid, grounded form of the woman's face. It is a study in texture and tone, demonstrating Iser's ability to convey character through a limited, controlled colour scheme.
