Description
A masterful mezzotint by Sir Frank Short, depicting a mourning angel in a scene defined by deep, atmospheric shadows and precise tonal control.
Sir Frank Short, a master of the printmaking medium, produced The Sorrowing Angel in 1889. This work demonstrates his technical command of mezzotint, a process that relies on the manipulation of light and shadow across a copper plate. By roughening the surface to hold ink and then scraping it back to create highlights, Short achieves a tonal range that moves from deep, velvety blacks to soft, luminous greys. The composition centres on a winged figure, head bowed and hands covering the face in a gesture of mourning. The angel leans over a stone sarcophagus or altar, upon which a collection of feathers or foliage rests. Below this, a relief carving of a human form is visible on the base, adding a layer of sculptural depth to the scene. The atmosphere is heavy with quietude, typical of the late nineteenth-century interest in allegorical and melancholic subjects. Short was a significant figure in the revival of original printmaking in Britain. He served as the President of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers for many years. His approach to the medium was disciplined, favouring the subtle gradations of tone that mezzotint allows over the sharper, more linear qualities of etching. In this print, the darkness does not merely obscure; it defines the form of the angel, creating a sense of weight and presence. The figure occupies the frame with a stillness that invites contemplation, avoiding theatricality in favour of a restrained, sombre mood. The print remains a fine example of the technical rigour applied to emotive, symbolic themes during the period.
