Description
A Cubist portrait by Albert Gleizes, 'The Schoolboy' deconstructs the figure into geometric forms and planes, rendered in a limited palette of blues, greens, reds, and greys.
Albert Gleizes (1881-1953) was a French artist, theorist, philosopher, and a central figure in the Cubist movement. Along with Jean Metzinger, he co-authored 'Du Cubisme' (1912), the first major theoretical text on Cubism. Gleizes experimented with abstraction and explored the relationship between art and mathematics. His work evolved through different phases, including an interest in religious symbolism and a return to figuration later in his career. 'The Schoolboy' exemplifies Gleizes's Cubist style. The figure is deconstructed into geometric forms and planes, rendered in a limited palette of blues, greens, reds, and greys. The composition is fragmented, presenting multiple viewpoints simultaneously. The subject is discernible, but the emphasis is on the formal arrangement of shapes and colours rather than a realistic depiction. The painting reflects the Cubist aim to break down traditional perspective and represent the essence of the subject through abstraction.
