A Fauvist landscape by Maurice de Vlaminck, this painting depicts the River Seine at Chatou with bold colours and expressive brushwork. The scene captures the river with a small sailboat in the foreground.
Maurice de Vlaminck (1876-1958) was a French painter known for his role in the Fauvist movement. He embraced bold colours and energetic brushwork, often depicting landscapes with an emotional intensity. Although he experimented with Cubism and other styles later in his career, he is best remembered for his Fauvist paintings. Chatou, a suburb of Paris, was a frequent subject in his work. Other Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists, such as Renoir, also painted there. In this painting, Vlaminck captures the River Seine at Chatou with a distinctive Fauvist approach. The scene is rendered with broad, visible brushstrokes and a palette of intense, non-naturalistic colours. The water is a patchwork of blues and greens, reflecting the sky and surrounding trees. A small sailboat is anchored in the foreground, its yellow hull contrasting with the cooler tones of the water. On the river, a larger boat is depicted in dark blue and black. The trees on the riverbank are painted in shades of orange and pink, adding to the overall sense of heightened colour and expressive energy. The composition is dynamic, with the river flowing diagonally across the canvas, drawing the viewer's eye into the scene.
