A detailed narrative scene from the Legend of Saint Ursula cycle, capturing the departure of the English ambassadors in a Venetian-inspired setting.
This work is part of the cycle depicting the Legend of Saint Ursula, originally commissioned for the Scuola di Sant'Orsola in Venice. Vittore Carpaccio demonstrates his mastery of narrative composition, filling the canvas with a wealth of detail that reflects the social and architectural climate of late fifteenth-century Venice. The scene captures the moment the English ambassadors take their leave, set against a backdrop that blends classical structures with contemporary Venetian urban elements.
Carpaccio organises the space with a clear sense of perspective, guiding the viewer from the foreground figures towards the harbour and the distant buildings. The figures are rendered with precise attention to their period attire, showcasing the fashion of the time through varied textures and colours. The architecture, featuring a prominent loggia and a bridge, provides a structured environment for the unfolding drama. The artist employs a balanced palette, using light to define the forms and create a sense of atmospheric depth across the scene.
Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on singular religious icons, Carpaccio prioritised the storytelling aspect of his commissions. He populates the scene with numerous individuals, each engaged in subtle interactions that contribute to the overall narrative flow. The inclusion of specific architectural motifs and the careful arrangement of the crowd demonstrate his interest in the intersection of human activity and the built environment. This print captures the clarity of his original brushwork, allowing for an examination of the small details that define his approach to historical and legendary subjects. It remains a primary example of the Venetian school's ability to integrate complex narratives into expansive, well-ordered compositions.
