A striking portrait by Iosif Iser, featuring a figure draped in a bold red shawl, rendered with expressive, heavy impasto brushwork.
Iosif Iser, a central figure in Romanian modernism, frequently explored the human form through a lens of expressive colour and textured application. In this portrait, the subject is draped in a striking red shawl, which dominates the visual field. The artist employs a heavy impasto technique, building the surface with thick, deliberate strokes that give the work a tactile quality. The background is composed of deep, shadowed tones, which push the figure forward and create a sense of psychological weight. Iser spent significant time in Dobruja and later in the Middle East, where he became fascinated by the local inhabitants and their traditional attire. This work reflects that period of his career, focusing on the interplay between the subject and the fabric. The red of the shawl is not a uniform block of colour, but a collection of varied hues and light reflections, achieved through the layering of paint. The figure's expression is contemplative, with the gaze directed away from the viewer, adding to the sense of isolation within the composition. Technically, the painting demonstrates Iser's departure from academic realism. He prioritises the emotional resonance of the brushwork over precise anatomical detail. The structure of the face is defined by light and shadow rather than rigid lines, allowing the features to emerge from the surrounding darkness. This approach to portraiture was common among European modernists of the early twentieth century, who sought to capture the essence of a subject through simplified forms and emotive palettes. The result is a work that feels immediate and raw, relying on the physical presence of the paint to convey the mood of the sitter.
